About me
I discovered yoga in 1995 at Integral Yoga in NYC. It was around the corner from my apartment in Greenwich Village. I fell in love immediately - the chanting, the incense, the breathing. It was a respite from the concrete jungle of the city and my high-stress job as a publicist in book publishing. Unexpectedly, it also began to alleviate the chronic lower-back pain that I had since adolescence. I was hooked.
I knew that someday I'd want to spread the word about yoga to others. In 2003, my window of opportunity opened. I moved to LA and completed my first teacher training at The Center for Yoga (now Yoga Works) with the venerable and wise Diana Beardsley, with whom I apprenticed and studied Anusara yoga. I've been teaching ever since.
I’m drawn to the process of alignment-based yoga because of the way that it heals and resets the body, and cultivates sensitivity and awareness in the mind. My classes focus on balancing commitment (tapas) with contentment (santosha), by connecting to self study (svadhyaya). We work deeply and intelligently to develop a refined internal observance, listening and responding to whatever challenges a pose presents. Sometimes going deeper; other times, pausing and recalibrating. The breath is the key. My typical class might include a theme, mudras, and pranayama as we work toward a peak pose or series of poses.
I've taught all levels and many different styles of yoga over the past 21 years. From preschoolers to at-risk youth to seniors; from beginners to Restoratives to Flow. My favorites? The ones that I'm currently teaching (always!): Slow Flow and Restoratives.
I've had the honor of attending a mind-boggling number of classes, trainings and workshops with many inspiring teachers, including: Anatomy classes with Ellen Heed; Anusara-based classes and workshops with Desiree Rumbaugh, Jeanne Heileman and Maria Cristina Jimenez, among others; Yoga for At-Risk Youth teacher training with Hala Khouri; Restorative Yoga teacher training with Jillian Pransky; Prenatal Yoga teacher training with Juliette Kurth, owner of Silver Lake Yoga; and another with Jessica Jennings, founder of Ma Yoga; and Yoga Sutras studies with Lani Daniels.
I continue to take workshops and trainings so that I can learn more ways to share this practice with students.
